Finishing up The Project

Something that I haven't really thought about was how to present my work. I ended up deciding that having a separate page on my website would work so I could also include a couple of quotes that people have said and let the videos loop. I designed this in a dark colour scheme since it is about nightlife. Looking back at it I think I could have definitely cut together a longer video or gone to Soho twice and filmed more different things. Timewise I also wasn't able to do much with sound nevertheless I had recorded bits of Soho. Next time I would enjoy having a look into sound design and taking more advantage of the tutorials and group crits.

Editing

I had a very clear vision when it came to the editing. I wanted there to be music in the background which sounds busy and hectic just like Soho. I chose a song I found on the internet which I thought matched perfectly. Two Techniques - Lemon D

I started looking at the clips and cutting out the best parts I liked on Adobe Premiere. The hardest part was definitely colour-grading everything since I have barely taken videos on my camera before especially not at night and I didn't like how red they turned out.

I started off by trying mixed-media animations. I printed each frame from a clip onto a piece of paper, drew and cut over it and then scanned it. I really liked the look of it but wasn't too sure whether this would be time efficient and the quality I was aiming for. Scanning the frames gives it a look which is in my opinion unachievable to recreate but this also meant that the quality of the video would get worse.

After trying this technique I decided to go the digital route and edit everything online. I rotoscoped the animation son Photoshop using vibrant colours to represent the vibrant Soho and white pencil on top of it. While this looked very cool and colourful, it didn't really match what I was going for. There were too many different styles in one video and it didn't work together.

Tutorials and a trip to Soho!

After the tutorial I was a bit sceptical about my whole Idea and whether it was doable or not. Nevertheless, I ended up going to Soho on a Saturday Night around 11 pm. Just me and my camera. I knew it would be a risk to go by myself but I really just felt like this was something I wanted to do alone. Looking back at it, the shooting went surprisingly well. It took me about 30min to have the guts to take out my camera and go up to people asking them if they would answer a couple of questions and film them but everyone was super nice and open. I ended up asking a couple of questions to make the people in front of the camera feel more comfortable and to have more footage and information about how the people of Soho think about Soho's Nightlife. There is a rather big conflict about straight people being in Soho which makes the gay community feel unsafe and this got confirmed and brought up by multiple people. I met a lot of interesting people and the overall vibe felt very welcoming. Most older people as well as drag queens were uncomfortable being filmed but still reacted very nicely to my asking.
